Default Cycling idea - need your thoughts?

I am thinking of perhaps starting a "Cycling Challenge".

This would pit a certain number of cyclists (say 20 or so) that would form a Ute 'team' (say that loosely because it's not really a "team"...more like 20 riders)...against a Cougar 'team'.

Anyway, one team would start at LES, and the other would start at RES at the same time. The winner is when all 20 cyclist are safely across the finish line at the opposing stadium.

This "challenge" would be for raising money for a charity.

Anyone think this would fly?

(Also considered doing this the day of the Holy War and have both teams start from the stadium the game is NOT being played at and arriving at the stadium the game IS being played at....but weather could be a factor that late.)

Thoughts?

What is the elevation difference between both stadiums? I haven't been there for a very long time, but it seems to me like RES would be higher elevation, giving more downhill for the Utes than the Cougs.

It does sound fun, and I think it could work with the right organization. I think it would be just as fun to have a team road race to the gameday stadium rather than going in opposite directions.

you could do a team time trial that didn't involve busy highways/interstates.

And there could be multiple teams. require each team to have one woman at least.

also wind makes your idea bad.

anything but east-west wind kills it.

The two teams need to start together, with it rotating from year to year. This year I'd start from Cougar Stadium and end at Rice Stadium, and vice versa next year.

We could either do a large team time trial or a regular team road race.

Hmm...good thoughts all. Thanks.

Yes...the elevation gain to RES would not be an equal ride. Maybe a start and end at the same stadium...out and back sort of thing. Appx. 80 miles.

Relay?

Routes would be the same...non busy roads etc.

The Holy War time frame would be verrry iffy. So unpredictable in late November. Temps range anywhere from low to mid 50's to sub freezing and into the 20's with snow and ice.

I don't think that date would work.

I do like the idea of both teams starting together from the same place.

I also like the idea of having a mixed men/women team. Time trials would eliminate everyone but the very serious cyclist. Need something so that we could get more cyclists involved.

Maybe (since there are so many 'charity' rides)...maybe, a different idea is: any number amount of teams could enter the ride (you have to represent one school or the other)...and there is an entry fee of "XXXX.XX" amount of dollars to be raised, and it goes to the Athletic Fund of the school you are representing. A trophy for the most money raised, and a trophy for the fastest finishing team.

hmmmm...think ...think....think....

well, Borg, no need to reinvent the wheel.

every year there is a corporate team time trial in Dallas. Corporations enter teams. It's coed. No corporation, no team. (for example, my friends that worked at blue cross did it, but I couldn't). The coporate rules and coed thing makes it so that it really isn't professional. And good recreational riders can be a strong addition on such a team.

I'm assuming money goes to a charity, but I'm not sure.

How about towards a homeless shelter in Zion (aka Provo/Orem) so poor people don't freeze to death? That would be a good cause I would think.

DO it in the fall at the beginning of the season. A corporate style fun race is a good idea.

The real problem is funding for the support you would need (permission to use or close streets; law enforcement, permits, etc.) Maybe you should just do something underground and see if it grows.

I agree about the underground, informal idea at first. I've put on a 5K/10K before, complete with road closures, law enforcement and ambulance support. It was a real pain in the butt.

And why not do it on opening weekend of the football season? I think your response would be much better than the end of November.
