On SportsCenter a couple nights ago they showed Varitek's wristband that he wears to remember all the different pitches and signals. It also included some English to Japanese phrases for conferences at the mound. The wristband is ginormous, reaching halfway down his arm.

It could be fun to see Veritek in a game now - calling time out before each pitch, studying the wristband and looking like a fresh-faced Elder in the MTC trying to memorize the discussions in a foreign language.

Ah, the simple days of 1 finger is fastball, 2 fingers is curveball and 3 fingers is change-up. Or as Schroeder would tell Charlie Brown: "One finger is the high fastball. Two fingers is the low fastball."

I saw an article on the gyroball recently - according to the article, it's not as revolutionary as people are saying - that Pedro Martinez actually threw it, although he didn't call it a "gyroball"
