A follower of Dawat-e-Islami, a religious party based in Karachi, Mr. Qadri had joined the Special Forces branch of the Punjab police in 2002. At that time, he was declared a security risk because of his extreme religious views and sectarian activities during a routine check by his superior, according to a senior Pakistani police official.
In 2008, Mr. Qadri nonetheless managed to join the Elite Force of Punjab police, and had been assigned to guard the governor, raising alarming questions about the vetting and screening of security personnel, former police officials and associates of the former governor said.

Islam is full of cowardice unfortunately, and not enough is being done within Islam to fight the extremists who seem to kill with impunity and in fact market it as doing the will of the Prophet.

3rd world countries with no history of rule of law, full of corruption.....it's a situation where whoever is the most violent wins. There is no such thing as working within the system, because there is no system to work in.

Moderate liberals can't win in that situation, by default. Unless they can do a Gandhi kind of thing and just sacrifice themselves and try to shame these animals. Good luck trying to shame an animal like OBL. And the Taliban, while they string up women in their soccer stadiums.

the path of enlightening animals is strewn blood and horror. Only more improvement in the economies can rob the madmen of their power. As long as there is poverty for the general populace, OBL and such will continue to exercise power.

Russia is an example of a country that is trying to straddle the fence--corruption on one hand, and economic prosperity on the other.

But what they are finding is that foreigners are hesitant to invest in countries where the rule of law does not exist.

We have to be guardians of the rule of law. Guard it. "Cougar guard". Guarding is good.

I heard an interesting talk by a Dutch anthropologist who teaches in China.

He stated a couple of concepts required for democratic governance.

First, if you have scarcity of goods, that society does not do well with a capitalistic society. Because in such situations, somebody must ration and it's usually the strong arm of the law.

Second, your populace needs to be educated and to respect the rule of law. If you have anarchists, then any scarcity will bring them out. As is in Russian, the thugs rule the streets and the markets so there is no general economic success.

So yes, the rule of law and respect for it is important. Economic prosperity for as many as possible is also essential.
