Default Local Levi Sighting

Levi Leipheimer was here in town this weekend for a couple of days of mountain biking with the boys. It was basically only for the local racing team, so there was no open invitation as in year's past. Last night we carved pumpkins with the kids of one of the guys that led that group yesterday and got the play-by-play.

Levi did not wear any team kit this weekend as he wore plain a black kit both days (hmmm, sound familiar?). He was riding a Specialized S-Works full suspension bike. The guys asked him why he didn't want to ride the team Trek bike, and he just said he preferred Specialized. Turns out he is in talks with one of his buddies who he brought with him from Santa Rosa to buy a Specialized bike shop there when he retires in the next few years.

They put in very tough 4 hour rides around Whiskeytown Lake on both Saturday and Sunday. Levi is a very good mountain biker, surprising my buddy who is very good himself. He figured he would get smoked on the climbs, and then make up the gap on the descents. But Levi hung right with the faster guys bombing downhill. One guy from the local team, a Cat I/II, was able to stay within reach on the climbs, but Levi was clearly still in great shape and was able to accelerate away at will.

He was very quiet this weekend from what the boys had to say. In years past, he was much more open and talkative, but he really had very little to say. Sensing he was not really interested in discussing it, they didn't even bring up the whole Astana/ Discovery issue. The worst part was he didn't bring any team gear to give away as in times past when he was with Gerolsteiner.

So he's still in great shape, is still a nice guy, but was clearly not as jovial and happy as in years past, so you can interpret that however you want. Probably just preparing for media day with the stoic Eastern Europeans in a couple of months.

Was Boulder Creek one of the trails they rode? I'd be curious to know what Levi thought of that climb. He probably rode it in the big ring.

He said they started over at Oak Bottom and did some switchbacks heading into the hills. They somehow worked their way over to Crystal Creek trail and climbed up over the back side of Boulder creek and descended the single track part of that trail. Then they headed over along the south side of the lake and did the chimney trail, which was by far their favorite part of the ride.
