Are laws banning polygamny bad laws?
(Poll.) I think laws banning polygamy are good laws. I have no more problem with it than banning murder or abortion. These are moral choices as well. Polygamy is wrong. I disagree also that legalizing homosexuality dictates legalizing polygamy. I think it's very easy to draw principled distinctions. I do believe, however, that all the misguided arguments against homosexual marriage can be applied with greater force againt polygamny. If homosexuality threatens our traditional institution of marriage, even more so polygamy.
However, like murder and abortion, I think polygamy ought to be regulated at the state not federal level. I'd oppose any constitutional amendment making laws allowing polygamy unconstitutional or a Supreme Court decision finding a requirement that all marriages be monogomous among the penumbras in the Bill of Rights.

How do you feel about gay marriage?
How do you feel about multiple sexual partners? Those FLDS are not married, at least the second wives and others. They merely have designated themselves are married in their own minds and in their religion. Are you saying that should be illegal? Which law school did you go to? |

I say yes they are bad laws.
I'm not big on polygamy. But in today's PC world of tolerance, banning polygamy sticks out as an inconsistency. It's a decision between adults. It's an important religious belief to some people. |

How pathetic when a lay person tries to play lawyer.

Hey Mr. Lawyer, then you support polygamy as it currently exists.
Sorry I tied you into a knot. |

I think government should completely abandon any formal recognition of marriage and instead allow legal partnerships between any two people. Then bans on polygamy and gay marriage become irrelevant.
Doesn't the polygamy ban really boil down to simply preventing multiple legal marriages anyway? |

No, the polygamy ban extends to people who just call themselves married, but do not rely on state recognition.

Consenting adults should not be separated. They should be left alone.
