It's only because generally speaking people still know very little about both candidates. Thompson is a joke. He is running as a Washington "outsider", but he spent 20 years in DC as a lobbyist. The guy has said nothing specific that I know of regarding what his agenda would be as Pres. He doesn't even know what the other Repubs positions are (said as much in an interview).

On the other hand, Romney has proved that the more people see him, and get to know his positions, the higher he rises in the polls. Romney would destroy Thompson in a debate also.
