Default Trebuchet anyone?

Has anyone ever made or used a trebuchet? I have always wanted to chuck a piano or some other simislary unlikley but potentially amusing piece of household furniture with one. Does anyone know where one is in the western US that could possibly be used?

Here is what I mean (warning, avoid link if you are sensitive about dead cows. really.)

and here (wihtout the dead cow) http://uk.geocities.com/osfuk/osf/treb.html

When you check out the link note that the dead cow flew three quarters of a mile! Am I the only one that thinks witnessing such an event would be fascinating, somewhat gross and cool all at the same time?

Three quarters of a mile. Tremendous.

Wow. That looks like a great time.

Speaking of trebuchets, check out this site:

http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/02/...y-ride-videos/

Scroll down to video 3 and you will see what I mean.

Actually, you should watch all three videos. They are hilarious. Escpecially to a guy like me that thinks pimped-out cars are beyond absurd.

Now THAT is what I am Tlaking about. Ideally I would like to see a little more distance, but it seemed to me that they had it set to be short so they could keep it in frame. Excellent video.

I saw some sort of National Geographic History Channel thing about the modern making of it. Very interesting. And they were successful with two different kinds of models. Ingenious.

3/4 of a mile???? Amazing.

Some of the kids in my ward were given an assignment last year for their physics class to build a trebuchet. A civil or mechanical engineers dream, of which we have two in our bishopric. It was so funny to see these guys at a YM activity working on this thing. 20 minutes later, the boys are all climbing trees and shooting BB guns and there are about 6 adults working on this physics project.

They were mildly successful with the project, but were only able to chuck the cat a couple hundred yards as opposed to the whole 3/4 mile those crazy brits were.

Nice to know there are fellow Northern Exposure fans on the board. The Trebuchet episode was my favorite episode of my favorite television series. I dreamed of making one in art school, and almost did.

Not only would I want to witness it, I would want to be the one to break the mile barrier by hurtling a cow through the air.
