Elko County in Nevada is two times
bigger than Massachusetts, bigger than seven state, (not combined but bigger than four of the smaller states combined), and bigger of course than DC in land mass.
Elko County one of our fourteen or so counties has 17000 square miles, whereas Mass only has 7800 square miles.

I know that every time I've driven through it I've decreased the jackrabbit population significantly.

40,000.
And lots of beautiful hunting and fishing grounds. Plus a family ranch we have in the Ruby Mountains.

17000 sq. miles and 40,000 people? That's like 2.35 people per square mile.
Those over-population nuts are correct - there is no more room for anyone on this planet.

I hope we keep out all those visitors. We don't need any more. Just bring your money and leave.

Elko also has a very large Basque population. They migrated there as sheepherders, especially north of Elko - towards the Owyhee Mtns.
Bonus question: where did the Owyhee River get its name? |

Somebody was crossing the river on a fallen tree, slipped and was injured on a rock?

Here is the background... "...It was named for three Hawaiian trappers, in the employ of the North West Company, who were killed by Indians. About one-third of the men with Donald MacKenzie's Snake Country Expeditions of 1819-20 were Hawaiians -- commonly called "Owyhees" or "Sandwich Islanders" in those days. The three Owyhees were detached to trap on the river in 1819 and were probably killed that year. It was not until the spring or early summer of 1820 that MacKenzie learned the news of their deaths (probably at the hands of men belonging to a band of Bannocks led by a chief named The Horse). Indians led other trappers to the site, but only one skeleton was located. The earliest surviving record of the name is found on a map dating to 1825, drawn by William Kittson (who was previously with Donald MacKenzie in 1819-1820, and then with Peter Skene Ogden in 1825), on which he notes "Owhyhee River" [sic]." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owyhee_River |
