While herpes can be an STD it is not necessarily an STD. The common cold sore is caused by the herpes virus and can be transmitted simply by kissing.

Simplex 1 is mostly oral (e.g. cold sores) and Simplex 2 is mostly genital although both strains can manifest in both locations.
