Default Romney: What might have been

Assume Governor Romney had run, not this horrifying socially conservative Frankinstein concoction of the consultants. First, Tex wouldn't have liked him so much, but that he could have survived, I think. Assuming he could live without Tex's endorsement, here's how it would have unfolded:

Huck wins Iowa

Romney wins NH

(McCain out)

Romney wins Michigan

(Giuliani starting to see his socially liberal, fiscally conservative, tough on Islamic fundamentalism base melt away)

Huck wins SC

Romney wins Florida

(Giuliani out)

Romney wins NY, NJ, MO, CA, CT, MA, IL, AZ

Romney wins the nomination

Karma karma karma camelion, you come and go, you come and gooooo...

I don't think that is far off. Romney has run an awful campaign. If he doesn't win the nomination, I don't know what he does after this.

He can't go back to Mass. He has burned that bridge, and peed on the ashes. He could try Utah or Michigan, but if he thinks he looks like a panderer now, he would look even worse carpetbagging for political gain.

Can he run for president again? Maybe, but he hasn't exactly excited huge numbers of people (outside Utah). So what is next? Back to business?

They were already saying last night that if nothing else, this campaign gets his name out there and people can become familiar with him and in particular his religious affiliation.

Brokaw and Co. believe he'll run again.

I don't know what these people do. What did Reagan do after 1976? What did Nixon do after 1962?

I'm sure he'll get plenty of advice. Whatever it is, he should target the South.

Then again he could just go out and make another $100 million.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

Romney needs to do something where he can legitmize himself as a non-fake person.

Good luck.

I don't think moderates would ever end up nominating Romney over McCain, esp. with the so-called "success" of the surge. If Iraq was considered a continuing debacle (which, for some reason, it isn't, in the opinion of the GOP), that could have been enough to push Romney ahead I think.

But it was not to be.
