The trombone was allowed as a sacred instrument within the church, because it is within the range of the human voice, and functions as the voice, not chromatically like most keyed wind instruments. It's notes are limitless like the human voice.

What time frame are we talking about here? It sounds liek about the same time they might see if a woman was heavier than a duck to determine if she was a witch.
