To give the appearance of stability and confidence. Would you as a recruit want to come play for a coach who was not likely to last more than one season?

They sacrifice millions of dollars in buy-outs to persuade a few 18-year-old high schoolers to give them a second look? Do a quick poll of last years LOI commits and find out which ones knew what their prospective coach's contract terms were, and what year he was in.

I don't buy it.

It's usually not "millions". Adding one year to a guy who was making 500k a year is not "millions".

Because if you are not offering a long term contract, no one is going to coach your team. No self respecting coach is going to play on a one year deal in this day and age.

It will be very exciting for the Cougars to play a UCLA team led by an interim coach.
