Default Sin-- to miss the mark.

Somebody asked me about this the other day, and I found the following after a bit of research. The Greek word in the New Testament ἁμαρτία (amartia) means "to miss the mark"-- which word we translate as "to sin." Whoever it was that asked, hope that helps.

Missing the mark sounds nicer than sin.

That's good to know. So if missing the mark is sinning, then it means that kickers are the probably biggest sinners on a football team. If our kicker wouldn't have sinned against Arizona and Boston College, BYU would have been undefeated last season. (Weak, I know).

Karl Malone sinned in Game 1 of the 1997 NBA Finals from the free throw line. MJ didn't sin (after he pushed off) in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals.
Had Kanishiro not sinned the Utes would have had won that game in RES.
Had Payne not sinned against BSU, BYU would have had a .500 season.

Interesting. I had to write a paper freshman year on Jacob 4:14

Quote:
14 But behold, the Jews were a stiffnecked people; and they despised the words of plainness, and killed the prophets, and sought for things that they could not understand. Wherefore, because of their blindness, which blindness came by looking beyond the mark, they must needs fall; for God hath taken away his plainness from them, and delivered unto them many things which they cannot understand, because they desired it. And because they desired it God hath done it, that they may stumble.
This seems like intentional sin, whereas "missing the mark" can seem more accidental.
