Why would BYU invite Cheney?
At the core, I think Cheney's political views parallel those of many at BYU, but it seems to me inviting him as the commencement speaker is maybe not a wise PR move for BYU, nor the church at large.
Cheney is radioactive, in the larger public's view. Why pave the way for a predictable validation of BYU's stereotype of being arch, arch, John-Birch-Society conservative? |

Hey, Ma'ake! Welcome. Stick around, buddy.
I agree with Mike. Here is another interesting point: "He may be the most unpopular vice president in history and he may be the most unpopular person in America right now, so, yes, where else could he go?" Hawkins [BYU political science professor ] said. "It doesn't surprise me the White House called back and wondered if BYU would take him. I seriously doubt he'd be welcome at a lot of other universities." http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,660205616,00.html
