Default Something else I learned from the McKay book...

That it was during the Wilkinson era (and by the suggestions of Wilkinson) that the church put out the word that LDS kids should go to BYU. Prior to his tenure, this apparently was not anything that was stressed in the church.

I have surmised that even though the church has made a decent effort in the past 15 years to change this stance, it hasn't sunk in with much of the membership. I believe that the talk of "but BYU is the Lord's University" is a vestige of the Wilkinson era that the church has not been able to successfully end among much of the membership.

I think the real reason is that prior to Wilkinson there weren't many Californian girls coming to BYU.

The rest is history.
