You folks should organize a book-burning.

I don't follow this logic. Apparently, because I disagree with the 'intellectual' trying to preach his version of gospel as truth, I despise scholarly study of religion?
On the contrary, I support the intellectual LDS community, and wish them the best. I think boards like this are an appropriate forum for discussing topics those individuals are interested in. I simply hope that those intellectuals will not deem themselves the teachers of others, and start pushing their opinions as truth.

Try not to be hurt if your intelligence has been affronted.
There are those who bring up a question and open it for discussion. I have no problem with this. However, there are those who are not content at the discussion phase. They make proclamations to other intelligent members sitting in class that, Baptism does not wash away your sins as if they know that for a fact. Please, if it isn't stated as fact somewhere in scripture, then it is simply conjecture. I had a great institute teacher up at the U. Often he said, this is my opinion on what this scripture means. I thought, if it is good enough for him to say it is his opinion, it ought to be good enough for teachers in ward settings. |

I admit I was abashed when I read the same comment I made in exUte's post. Ugh.

In one respect, this is a question of overstating the strength or validity of one's position. Heterodox members can be guilty of this, but so can orthodox members. Orthodox members can be guilty of it, when they're not aware when they're conjecturing.

True enough, the village idiot can be just as guilty as preaching false doctrine as anyone else. And, it bothers me just as much.
