Thanks for sharing.
Elements of a very good highlight reel: 1. Good music. Ideally something that the audience is largely unfamiliar with, because the slection is part of your wit. The music ought to have contrasts in it--moments of quiet, moments of uproar, and you ought to use it to provide visual contrasts. 2. Most people who do these include too much material. So you watch some rather ho-hum 7 yard run up the middle, and you are thinking why it was included. Don't let the length of the music drive the length of the reel. Cut, cut, cut. 3. Show your wit. Any number of ways to do this. I remember one BYU reel that had a shot of a really pretty girl. And then later he goes back to the same clip of the girl and plays it backwards. Hot, hot, hot. And unique. 4. Do some interesting things. Like the movie 300--alternate super slow-mo, and very fast motions in the same sequence. 5. Cuts generally need to be much faster. We are the MTV generation, and the post-MTV generation. We have an attention span of fractions of seconds. A 10 second play can kill the piece. |
