I did it
I am now a "cyclist". Or at least I own a bike and a bunch of accessories. Went with a cheap mountain bike. Ended up not going with the Trek at all as I went to a 3rd bike shop (one of the ones Mike recommended ... Performance Bikes) and they had one almost identical to the Trek 4300 but with disk brakes. I won't tell you the brand for fear of mockery. But it was inexpensive and is a good starting point for me. I did have them swap out the knobbies for slicks. Even with a cheap bike I walked out of there $650 poorer with the helmet, emergency tool kit, water bottle and cage, cheapest computer they had ($20), etc. The trunk rack was $70 by itself.
Got home at dusk but took it for a spin around the neighborhood anyway. It's a two mile loop around my block. Let me just say I SUCK! And no high end bike will change that. Getting out and moving my legs on this one will. The good news is I didn't notice my butt hurting since my quads hurt so bad. |

That sounds great. The best bike is the one you ride. Enjoy!

FM, if you bring that baby down with you to the Dunes, you can ride from Newport up to Seal Beach along the ocean, if you wanted to.
That isnt a bad ride on a sunny July morning......

I'll bring it for sure. I have almost 3 months until then so I'd hope by then I'd be up for a real ride like that.

Good for you! I picked road cycling up this winter and find it some of the most relaxing time I have. Not that it isn't painful but it is very cathartic and one of the few times I can let my mind rest and only concentrate on me. It is a great side benefit to getting in shape through cycling.

Awesome FM, way to go! I think you made a great choice.
You know, to help keep you committed, you should start a blog of your weight loss adventures. It would be cool to follow your progress. If you feel like you want to get into running a bit in the future, there are a couple of excellent run/walk novice programs you can try. |
