Default Do Mormons have poor mental health?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080306/...ntal_health_dc

Quote:
Vermont leads the United States in marijuana use, while Utah has the highest number of people reporting mental health problems, U.S. government researchers said on Thursday, based on a new state-by-state report.
Utah has poor mental health despite having some of the lowest rates of substance abuse (or because of low rates of substance abuse?).

So what is the deal here? Are Mormons unhappy?

When you think of what the Mormons did to Danzig, and now Jessop, along with their opposition to gay marriage, why wouldn't Mormons be unhappy. And then you have Beck telling mothers how to be perfect. Sheesh! I expect suicides skyrocketing and membership to drop like a rock.

Unhappy times ahead for all those Mormon sheep.

I know that some of you will want to dismiss these findings as inconsequential and without merit. Rather than discussing and exploring them. What are you afraid of?

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

Utah mormons are fine. It's all the non-mormons living there that feel guilty for their wicked lifestyles that drive those stats.

I'm inclined to think that Mormons' unwillingness to self-medicate has something to do with it, but I also think it's obvious that many Mormons are unhappy due to feelings of inadequacy and impossible expectations.

Utah has a fairly high suicide rate as well, as does the entire western United States.

Is it that Mormons have a heightened sense of their mental health, focusing so much on our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being? Others just tend to live more without stressin' so much about how they're doing.
