If you won a trillion dollars, would you spend it all on baseball cards and microwaveable popcorn?

I bet once again most people will be scared to vote in this poll.

Adam's right on this. Of all the people that have been told to kill someone by God in the history of the world, I'm guessing 99.9% of them were crazy. I'm going to go with the odds on this one and assume God wouldn't want me to kill someone. God can strike someone down if it needs to happen. The worst thing that will happen to me is I'll have some extra repenting to do for lacking faith--not the worst sin ever committed.

I love how every conversation I get involved in turns into a poll.

I didn't know you were even involved in it. I love it's always about you, Tex, at least in your own mind.
My point is God never told anyone to kill his child. It's an old legend, and most people know that in their hearts. Those that don't ought to consider option 3 above (in practice, not as a vote necessarily). But don't get me wrong. I love the old legends maybe as much anyone could.

Nah, you're right. The only person here with a Tex-obsession is SoCalCoug.

Quote:
1. If God is talking to you, how do you know if it really is God? 2. Would God ever actually ask you to kill your child? 3. If God went to the trouble of actually talking to you, what are the odds that the reason for that was so that he could get you to kill your child? Assuming we can set aside the concerns about whether or not your encounter with God is the byproduct of a mental breakdown or a bad bowl of cereal (because frankly, that argument is just a copout), the more interesting question is whether or not you are justified in not heeding a direct command from God. Peter initially balked at Christ washing his feet until Christ said if Peter refused then he would have no place with him. When given that ultimatum, Peter eagerly complied. Joseph Smith did not immediately heed the command of God to take additional wives until God sent an angel wielding a sword to obtain compliance. Certainly, letting your feet be washed by Deity or being required to undertake polygamous relationships is an easier proposition than being required to kill your child, but the underlying principle is the same. Please note that the above examples all involved prophets of God, not the rank and file members of his church. However, if you are fundamentally unwilling to follow a direct command from God, it's my opinion that you seriously need to reconsider your position. |
