May 5th for those near Vegas
has a truly spectacular century ride, with a super century and subcentury distances.
It's been previously referenced and is called "Tour de Fire". PS. My kids will be manning some of the aids stations while dad pops out the century.

Try and get a hotel that weekend in Vegas with Mayweather and De La Hoya fighting. That should be an adventure in itself.

Easy, get one at Lake Las Vegas, or in Henderson, which nearer the cycling event any way.

I was in Vegas today. We had front row tix for the Phantom of the Opera matinee at the Venetian, and also saw the Ansel Adams collection at the Bellagio and snacked on Gelato. (I lost 4 lbs last week and deserved a treat).
Call it ute4ever's Break the Sabbath Spectacular, an alternative to The Century in 97-degree heat. |

All the affordable hotels are sold out. This is a bad weekend to try and book a room.
For a normally affordable place to stay...this has become quite an unaffordable weekend.

Did you try the Residence Inn in Henderson? Perhaps, if you're dedicated, motel archaea. mrs archaea must be consulted.

Well, thanks for all the suggestions and offer. Truly kind of you.
I do have a friend that lives out there, but, he has plans and is fairly busy. Was looking for a hotel so that any inconvenience would be kept to a minimum for him. I will be there with bells on... Will be doing the 98 mile route. Looking online, it has been scorching out there lately...but is only supposed to be in the mid 70's come Saturday. Whew! What a relief!

Archaea,
How much of a grind is the 98 mile version of the Tour de Fire? Is it a climbfest or gradual ups and downs. Bottom line is...will I die if I'm not a climber?

It's not like doing the Alpine Loop, or Tour de Gap, but you are modestly climbing or descending. I'm not a climber, but I'm not afraid of climbing. There are no, or relatively no, flat sections. The grades are relatively modest but the pace may not be.

Tour de Fire report
Hey, this was a fun ride. You were pretty accurate...no flats, ups and downs all the way.
Really enjoyed this one. The hills weren't just demoralizers, but were doable for a schmoe like me, scenery was fantastic, weather pretty good...overall, I had a really nice time. My riding buddy was doing only his second cycling event, and only did the 38 mile route. I ended up doing the 75 mile. Not a bad day for climbing most of the time. This is one that I would do again.
