Default Hotter N Hell 100 tomorrow

100 miles of pure blazing heat in Wichita Falls, TX.

I'm probably going to take it easy. I've done the sub 5 hour century. I have nothing left to prove.

Maybe I'm just jealous, but I say the sub 5 doesn't count unless the century has at least 4000 feet of climbing.

holy hell, the ride finally lived up to its name. 109 degrees. Heaven knows the temperature reflecting up from the asphalt.

When I finished I was like a salt-sicle. I have heat rash on both thighs.

My dad bonked with cramps 50 miles in. His lack of fitness extended the ride time into the early afternoon. Did I mention the heat?

Fun part of the ride was in the morning. It was cool to be in a 30mph paceline. On a flat. Of course, I had to stop for my dad to catch up.

It was so hot, that my eyes started burning with salt. I had to stop to wash my eyes.

12,000 riders. Air Force flyover. Cool event (but not temperature-wise).

We won't talk about my time.

Wow! That's the biggest century I've ever heard of. Sovang was the biggest I've ridden in and I think it had 6,000. We were all thinking that was too big. Did you see a lot of wrecks?

I didn't see any wrecks, though I have seen a couple in years past.

Riders were dropping like flies. Towards the last 30 miles, you'd see rides on the side of the road lying underneath whatever shade they could find. Never seen so many bonks. The logistics of a ride this big are incredible.

After my dad got cramps, I saw a vulture circling in the sky. I told him "See that vulture? He's got his eyes on you."

If you ever get the chance, I would recommend the ride. It's fun to ride with so many people. If I weren't with my dad, I would have sucked wheel much more than I did. But since he had a hard time hanging with any group, I did a lot of riding in the wind. 15 mph headwind in 109 degree heat is nothing to laugh at.

Default Congrads to you and your father

How old is your Dad? I promised to take some guys through Yellowstone Park (lower loop=124 miles) in two weeks and I haven't done a hundred miles in a day in over twenty years. I'm a little worried about hitting the big bonk after about 75. Some guys I ride with are doing Lotoja (Logan to Jackson) which is about 200 miles.

109 degress and a head wind sounds brutal. That kinda heat I think would have killed me.

He's in his late 50's.

He was weak this year due to lack of riding. But in the year previous he was about as strong as me (because he had 2x - 3x my miles).

Those yellowstone roads would make me nervous, if I was riding alone. But with a group, I suppose you would be reasonably safe. Crazy drivers.

Default Yellowstone

I've done it a couple of times many years ago and once you get pass Old Faithful the traffic really drops. Its the start of the off season also so I hope it won't be to bad.

Holy *&^%, I was reading that someone at HHH recorded temperatures varying over 115 to 120 degrees on his cyclocomputer (meaning that it is hotter over pavement than just plain ambient air temp at the airport for example).

Plus a couple of the stops had no ice. It was true suffering in the heat. The hottest ever in 25 years.

Perhaps this explains why I am now sick.
