The irony of his life story is that most Americans will remember him as an arrogant, whiney Frenchman, who displayed bad behavior upon defeat to Lemond in 1989.

But as life went on, he grew in favor, and Lemond has descended into a fit of self-absorption, accusation and needless, arrogant self-promotion to the detriment of the sport. The roles have been completed reversed, so Fignon actually grew on me. And Lemond, from my hometown has turned out to be an A-1 jerk.
