They had absolutely no problem making up Ventoux with this program. So its possible to become a good climber without any mountains, if you believe what these guys say.
They asked Andy Hampsten one time how he got to be such a great climber having grown up in North Dakota and he said him and his brother just rode into the wind all the time. Of course it didn't hurt that he weighed about 140 lbs.

And you're George Hincapie, but better looking. A single day classic rider is our Viking.

George and I weigh about the same, but he is 6 inches taller than me.

But yes, I am better looking than he is. And my wife is better looking than his.

Do you have any solutions how to gain climbing power not just endurance?

I think incorporating slow frequency, high resistance work into your program would be helpful. Grinders, in the range of 40-60 rpm. Caution should always be used with these and should not be done too often, as they can be a bit tough on the knees. Once a week is usually good, twice at the very most. Most people do 3-10 minute intervals of SFR (Slow frequency, hi resistance), although a couple of my buddies go up to 20 minutes at a time. HR should stay low, in the 60-80% range.

this is also a good opportunity to work on smoothing out the pedal stroke, as it can be tough to do at a normal higher cadence.

Miguel Indurain was a big man (6' 2" 175 lbs) who could climb but he had a lung capacity of 8 litres compared to the average person of 6. Merckx was also big guy that could climb but I think he as just the toughest SOB on a bike back them and could out suffer them all. I'm looking for hope and jealous of you little guys when I see you fly up those mountain roads.

Holy crap, we've got some little guys on here.

I'm 6'2" and weight about 230-235. I'd like to get down to the 200-210 range, but I wouldn't say that I'm in terrible shape. I do have a 'thicker' build by nature.

I am 6'5" and weigh 242 pounds. I am on my second week of weight watchers to try to get down to 220 which is my ideal weight.
