I really think the key to going faster is to continually up your mileage during the year. If I'm doing 40 mile rides I will throw a 60 mile ride in there to test the body. After doing this I always feel stronger and faster on the 40 miles rides. After a couple of weeks of this do a 80 mile ride and your next 60 will be faster.

When they asked Eddy Merckx what the key was to becoming a good rider he said "ride lots".
