Wow.

I wonder if it would be worth the effort if newspapers put forth more effort to their online editions and eventually stopped printing. Perhaps printed papers are suffering because of the online sources are able to get current news out much more quickly.

They are suffering because news is essentially free now. And classifieds are free as well.

What is ironic is that, kind of like NPR, news in the future may be the domain of non-profit charity-type organizations. You pay for news because you believe it is important, not because you have to.

The death of the newspaper is a real tragedy, I think.

The death of magazines is close to follow. One of my clients has been in the publishing business for forty years, and details for me the slow but certain death of the news publishing business. There will come a time when magazines are not likely to exist, probably in the next five years.

Instead of The New Yorker, I give you dooce.com.

This is the tradeoff America is making.

That's a good point about the news being free.

Well Obama would certain sponsor a multi-trillion dollar bailout of magazines and newspapers supporting his presidency, so I don't think the New Yorker has anything to worry about.
