Default They came for the Jews,

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Pastor Martin Niemöller

That poem has been in my mind for a while now. Every time I hear more about Bush spying on Americans (and more from Americans who claim they don't care because they have nothing to hide), this poem pops back into my head.

It appears Congress is now in the situation where there is no one left to speak out against spying. I have no trouble with Rep. Jefferson's home being searched. I have no problem with him being arrested for bribery. I have a SERIOUS problem with the administration searching the offices of Congress for evidence.

At what point will people begin to realize that the Constitution is playdough in Bush's hands? He usurps authority on the pretense of "protecting Americans."

Congress is crying now about an invasion of their privacy, premised on the separation of powers. Sorry, Congress. The rest of us have had our privacy invaded by this president already. Get in line.

congress is a joke. neither the republicans nor the dems have spoken out against these abuses. Only when the media breaks the story do a few dems speak out (even though they already knew about the program and said nothing).

just another case of where we take it up the ass and congress only says something when asked to bend over and drop their pants.

im sick of Bush. I'm sick of people in power who don't care about this country.

I'm sick of Bush as well, despite the fact that I gladly voted for him both times. Sadly, I don't believe anyone else would be better than he is, as all politicians are the same. It's come to the point now that I vote for who I believe would suck less than the other.

What we need are people who has never been involved in politics to be in office, be it White House, Senate or Congress. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon.

The day Bush is the best there is to offer is the day I quit voting. I actually am optimistic about the upcoming presidential election. I think for the Democrats, Warner/Edwards/Richardson would all be good candidates. I think Warner will win the nomination, and I am very high on him. For Republicans, in think Romney will win the nomination (or at least get VP with Allen as nominee). I think both of them would be good candidates, though I disagree with their views politically.

I simply can't see another Kerry/Gore v. Jeb Bush or any other Bush nightmare occurring in 2008.

I would vote for Romney, but I don't think he'll get the nomination because of religious bigotry on the part of the religious right.

I agree that Jeb Bush would be a disaster.

If there could be a Libertarian candidate that I think would have a chance to be elected, I'd vote for him/her. However, that doesn't seem to be likely anytime while I'm alive, so I end up voting for the Republican because there is very little about the Dem platform that I agree with.

These upcoming mid-term elections, in my opinion, are going to be nothing more than the status quo. I don't think there will be very many new faces in the House or Senate, but it really doesn't matter, as all politicians are sellouts to whoever gives them the most money.
