My parents had missionaries living in their basement for a few years back in the early 90's. No separate entrance, but they did have their own fridge and microwave. My parents didn't seem to mind too much.

In our stake and ward, this has been implemented. In fact, our nearest LDS neighbors, a retired couple, just finished their six month stint. I intend to ask him about his experience now that it is over. My impression is that is was a bit rocky, but worked out OK.
