So I stand by my point that he is not going to make a whole album of "covers".

His dad apparently wrote that unique arrangement of "Imagine". That is cover, but not what we traditionally think of a cover.

I read an article about the original host Brian Dunkelman (and it was verified when I watched him on Celebrity fit club) that these kids are treated pretty much like slaves. They are given a very meager allowance, the first season they were allowed to stay in a nice house, now they stay in apartments that are not real flattering they work 12-15 hours a day, the show makes millions and the kids see none of it. Dunkelman claims that he was not fired from American Idol he quit because of this reason.

I understand he will be singing nothing but "covers" on the show. That is what the show is about, they actually rip you for singing songs that are not popular. So in order to win you sing popular songs and as DDD stated earlier "make them your own". But his album is not going to be a remake of Elton Johns greatest hits.

FWIW: My brother was just released as Bishop 3 weeks ago, but is still intimately close with the famliy and is staying in daily touch with Jeff and David.

My mom is SOOO excited because David has promised to come over to their house and sing some of her favorite hymns for her. I've had to temper her enthusiasm some because he likely won't have any time for the next 1-2 years to do this. I hope he's able to before her Alzheimers gets too bad.

Good to know. The papers are known to exaggerate their facts, for sure.

if David wins, the press will want even more access to him and his dad will likely come under more scrutiny as he tries to protect his son. They should hire a publicist and image consultant immedialtely. It is weird that AI owns this kid for the next few years, win or lose, and yet they damage his brand by leaking info about the dad.

From what I understand because of his cover/rendition of Imagine, and based on the reaction and feedback they've received, that they are already trying to get permission from Yoko Ono for him to record it for his first commerical release.

to do that they would have to share royalties, so you are probably right.

Does she own it outright? I can never keep track of which ones she owns, Macca, MJ, and now Sony Music.

If Yoko owns it, she will sell the rights. That song has been whored out all over the planet. Yoko has to continue to make a buck.

of course, if he does record it, then he will be doing a cover.

She has licensed that thing already all over the place...TV, other musicians, advertising, etc...
