But I hear that Beijing has really changed since they started doing the Olympic preparations.

There is a night and day difference between China and Japan. In so many ways.
It is cleaner than South America, bar none.

There are some very ritzy parts of Beijing, but Jeff the parts SU would visit are not the same middle class individuals such as myself visit. For example, they have six star hotels in Beijing, and six or seven ring roads now. The Subway is very small and doesn't cover much area.

Beijing is fragmented. Extreme wealth not too far from peasant farmers. That is actually not entirely true as many farmers are the ones who have become wealthy.

I was there to teach a seminar at a university about five years ago and there was a dust storm in the area. For the entire week, you could only see about a block or two in any direction. The sky was a reddish brown color and everything was covered in dirt. Even a six-star hotel wouldn't protect SU from that. I sure hope one of those storms don't hit during the Olympics. It would be a disaster.

Which University? BeiDa? or the technological university, Quinhua something or other.

I've heard about those dust storms but not experienced one yet. I hope they get rid of the coal smell in the air. Nonetheless I'd rather live in China a hundred times before South America.
