Going to a bar with friends and colleagues is always a win/win.
They pressure you to drink? Bam! You have a great testimony meeting story on dealing with persecution, ripe with judgment of the drunkards who attempted to force alcohol down you're throat. They don't pressure you to drink? You make a big scene of it and tell everybody that you're Mormon and you've never touched a drop in you're life, blah, blah, blah. You now have a missionary story to tell in Priesthood. No matter how you're treated, you always look righteous and have the stories to prove it. |

I love the WoW. It makes it easy to win the monthly poker tournament with the guys from my work when everybody else at the table is drunk and I've been drinking Diet Coke all night.
Since I tend to hang out mostly with other doctors, there are always a few other guys who are on call and aren't drinking either when we go out for dinner or "drinks". It's never been a big deal. Angioplasty/stenting of coronary arteries is pretty difficult to perform while intoxicated from what I have been told -- I'm glad I never have to worry about that. I wouldn't drink or smoke even if I wasn't LDS. My paternal grandfather was an alcoholic and I have a few cousins who are also slaves to tobacco and alcohol. Observing them was enough for me to not want anything to do with either product.
If SU and others want to believe that the WoW is the church's way to control me, I can't stop them from being completely wrong.
