Might I say, Soup, that is one f-i-n-e avatar you've got there.
That stinks about your kid's school. Even in Oklahoma they don't do stuff like that. The kids aren't even allowed to have Christmas parties anymore. Sooner, they originally lit the buildings in memory of the 168 lives lost in the bombing. Then they just left it that way. In a lot of ways the city never really got over it. |

I always liked Mormons' attitude toward the cross. It isn't avoided, obviously, but it isn't set up as an object to be worshiped. I remember on my mission wondering if these evangelical churches would have giant electric chairs or IVs decorating their walls had the technology been different.

The use of the cross as a Christian symbol originated with Constantine who in his vision that converted him to Christianity saw a cross that turned into a sword. Then he supposedly knew God intended for him to become a Christian and would help him defeat his enemies so he could become emperor of Rome. I don't know if that was before or after he murdered one of his wives and a son, but I think it was before. In other words, he wasn't exactly a great guy and there are plenty of reasons to doubt his sincerity. But that's a very old debate. I didn't get this info from an LDS source. I got it from James Carroll, a former Roman Catholic priest and still practicing Catholic who has struggled to come to terms with the history of his church, particularly regarding war. I highly recommend his documentary, "Constantine's Sword." I found it at Blockbuster. He also addresses other issues about the politicization of religion and it's connection to war today. It's excellent. http://constantinessword.com/

We don't use the fish either. Only our church is lame enough to depict a band freak on our spires.

Whatever symbols we do use, we have no need to feel guilty about not using the cross. As you've said before, we don't have to try to be the Methodists.
