There was a good one, though. My neighbor works for the Church reviewing curriculum, a verrry smart guy. I typically skip Sunday School unless he is teaching, because he gets out of the manual. I actually learn in his class. He's always telling us stories about his interactions with the GA's, but not in a name-dropping sort of way.

Anyway, he had a heart attack 6 weeks ago, and drove himself to the ER. He got up and bore his testimony, which he's never done in the 8 years I've lived here. He reflected on what his thoughts were as he was driving to the hospital, and if he was to die that day, how excited he was to see the Savior, but how deeply he would miss his family. It was a Christ-centered testimony and it was powerful. Best I've heard in a long time.
Thanks for sharing that.

My 1.8 cents:

Anyone who can grapple with the serious shit of LDS history, dogma, and policy (usual suspects: blacks & priesthood, women, gays, polyandry, polygyny, Packer's witch-hunts, and the ever-encroaching, shrill rhetoric of the republican party, etc.) and still show up on Sundays and participate in class or pack a bunch of whiny 14 year-olds off to camp for a week is a stronger member than a Davis-County mullah who's never tasted caffeine or watched a PG flick.

I'll bet CG has the strongest LDS around.

I don't know that battle scars equate to strength.

Most spiritual testimonies usually focus on Christ and the atonement. Thanks for sharing.

They don't indicate weakness.

Heh, battle scars, he says. Battle scars. Blacks and the priesthood, Packer so-called witch-hunts ... battle scars?

LOL. One wonders if y'all would've survived the first night in Winter Quarters.

Spiritual testimonies can center on anything the Spirit wishes them to center on. They most often center on Christ because he is the center of our religion. But that doesn't mean a testimony about Joseph Smith is un- or less-spiritual.

Don't disagree. Difficult to deal with issues beyond the "usual suspects" and still put on a happy face. Would like to understand the pervasiveness and trends of active LDS resignations.

Those without battle scars can be just as strong as those with.

But in truth, every member has battle scars. The wintry nights require that we do. Depends on how we weather them.

I don't understand why the issues we confront on CG make us stronger members than others.

I know many people in distant lands who have not confronted the usual suspects as of yet, but who have faced many battles we never will. The usual suspecs of issues are not the only battles members must face. I think it's supercilious to maintain that those who do are the strongest members.

You know it's OK to use a pronoun/noun every now and then to start your sentences.
