He is considered the father of the Western American literary canon.

Louis Lamour's wiki entry dwarfs Stegners. That is all I need to know about who is the more important Western writer.

Nibley couldn't hold Brodie's jock.

Brodie gets an awful lot of credit for merely going to her local libraries.

Nibley gets 13th apostle status for crappy scholarship and incoherent ramblings.

I've only read one piece by Nibley. It's the one where he attacks the materialistic, uncompassionate attitude of the saints.

He's about as 13th apostle as Kinky Friedman.

The main difference between Brodie and Brooks:

Brodie was raised by an unbelieving, apostate mother.

Brooks was raised in a believing community, with believing parents.

When Brodie got to the Univ. of Chicago, she "escaped".

When Brooks got to Columbia University, she came back to where she started.

Approaching Zion
? That's my favorite Nibley.

His stuff like this is good - at least, I find it interesting.

His ancient history stuff is nuts. Impossible even for specialists to follow.

Waters, why can't you accept that the LDS Church hurts a lot of people? Actually, I think you know that. Brodie reacted to Mormonism much like Solzhenytsyn reacted to the Soviet Union. Did people discount the credibility of historical aspects of his work because he was a refugee from the big red machine? Brodie was the same.
