What do you take us for, fools?!?!?!!?!?

Allen - loser
Huckabee - crazy
Crist - not that conservative and I'd never heard of him
Gingrich - fun to listen to, but . . . ugh
Santorum - loser
Hutchinson - why?

This must be your (as in Dem Party) dream team.

I'm hoping we can do better.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

The reason the VP choices are so bad is the same reason that the presidential choices were so bad.

I don't see a problem with Allen or Santorum, despite what happened in '06, except perhaps that they're both ex-Senators. Allen, of course, was a very popular southern govenor as well. Both remain extremely popular with conservatives, the constituency McCain will have the most trouble with. Both would make extremely capable presidents were the need to arise.

In the end, though, people vote for the President, not the VP. I don't think it adds as much to the ticket as folks think. The best thing to do is not pick a liability (see: Geraldine Ferraro, Dan Quayle).

With respect, you are not the audience those choices would be intended to reach.

The guys on the Corner are suggesting Coburn is a leading possibility, conservative senator from Oklahoma.

Coburn is more palatable, but Haddow has said that he would not be good on the campaign trail.

Coburn probably has rough edges, but stands for integrity and transparency in govt.. I still don't see how he adds to the ticket, since McCain has been a champion of similar things.

I doubt he'll end up picking her, but he'd be foolish not to at least consider it, despite what some people would call "transparent."

This space is usually devoted to pristine moral reasoning, but, hell, it’s an election year. Let’s get down and dirty. If McCain really wants to have it all—to refurbish his maverick image without having to flip-flop on the panderings that have tarnished it; to galvanize the attention of the press, the nation, and the world; to make a bold play for the center without seriously alienating “the base”—then he can avail himself of a highly interesting option: Condoleezza Rice.
