She didn't need him to give her work credence. But yes, Nibley's No Ma'am is a model of defensiveness. It's an interesting glimpse into Nibley's psyche, though. I especially like all of his angry references to "the lady. . . "

Brodie was intellectually dishonest, and that is what Nibley was reacting to.

And that is why Brooks will always trump Brodie in the annals of history.

Say what you will about Nibley's response, but that has to be the most clever pamphlet title in history.

They died not long from one another. Brodie's Wikipedia article dwarfs Brooks'. It's a shame Brooks' second husband made her quit working to raise his kids.

That has to be the most superficial apologetics in history.

That's funny that you claim "superiority" based on popularity. I will remember that when I piss on Wallace Stegner's (unknown and forgotten) grave.

I invite you to read Brooks' biography before you makes claims about what Juanita was forced or not forced to do.

He is lionized everywhere but Utah. That's my point. Go to the St. Louis arch and in the bookstore there is a whole wall devoted to him, like a shrine.

If you read his bio on Wikipedia, there is no overwhelming connection to Utah. He spent part of his boyhood in Utah. he graduated from the Univ. of Utah. And none of the rest of his life was apparently spent in Utah.

He wasn't born in utah, he didn't live in Utah as an adult, and he didn't die in Utah. And apparently he is well-known for writing about the people in Vermont.

WTF? What bullshit. LOL.

His most famous book Angle of Repose is set in California. He wrote many books about the Mormons and the Great Basin. One of his admired novels is called "Big Rock Candy Mountain."
