Perhaps he finally realized that he really couldn't replace Jerold Ottley.

I'm bummed by Jessop's retirement/symbolic protest because now we'll have to endure more of M. Wilberg's arrangements of classic hymns, which always focus on the flat notes. I like the strong majors; don't give me flats, Mac.

Unrelatedly, what the heck am I doing posting so much during my first 24 hours as a member of the Guard? It's like the guy who took his first sip of beer at a party and then downed the entire twelve pack over the next two hours. That analogy is too predictable. Hmmm, spend precious working moments thinking of a better one . . .

They've unearthed a nest of apostates in the orchestra. An orchestra is as ideal a place for breeding apostates as a swimming pool is for polio. Why do you suppose extreme Islam denounces music as the devil's work? They'll probably wind up disbanding it.

I didn't know that about polio and swimming pools.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.
