Especially when Clinton's economic legacy was borne of a tech bubble and people cooking their books.

And of course China's miraculously quick economic boom shortly after corporate espionage conducted from one of the presidential bedrooms, paid for with a campaign donation.

Is that what happened to Truman, Mike?

In the present, Bush is being judged on a single issue ... Iraq. But if you look at the total of his presidency (as historians will) he has been a pretty good President IMO.

Iraq sucks ... no question about it. We'll leave that discussion for another thread. But if you look at the economy, the lack of terrorist attacks on American soil, and the trickle down effect of Afghanistan and Iraq (aforementioned Libya and North Korea), it's not all bad.

What was Clinton's legacy? A good economy, so I guess his is sorry as well.

In reality, one can only have two things for a President, an economy and what happens in relation to war.

On count 1, he has fared well.

On count 2, poorly.

Bush is being judged harshly and probably rightly so, but any accomplishments are also ignored.

The judgment of a President is usually all bad or all good. I can't think of a positive thing about Carter. Clinton is a mixed bag.
The economy is doing well not because of what Bush has actually done, but because of what he's not done. He's at least been smart enough to keep his hands off it, so it's done well. When Democrats come in thinking they need to regulate everything is when it starts to sputter.

I'm not sure if you put the Bush tax cuts in the "done" or "not done" category, but however you look at it, they were a good thing.

Too bad we can't make them permanent.

Right or wrong, the President gets the credit/blame for the economy.
