That's always a fun argument.

Anyway, Smith sucks. Good college QB, couldn't make the leap. I'm willing to wager Beck has more success in his NFL career than Smith does when all is said and done.

That would make Ute fans' heads explode.
that's funny I thought SF record was 2-1?

You wont hear me arguing that he is doing great. But one thing to keep in mind: he's 22. There are a lot of guys who get good eventually if they can hang around long enough.

me too Since I'm a niners fan, but he has really looked bad again this year, although the 49ers OL problems have made it hard to judge.

I love it when people say that about a player: "He's one of the good guys in the league". It's the same thing people used to say about Kobe Bryant 5 years ago.

Ahh, yes. The age card. The trusty fall back for Alexi Smith defenders. "Did you know that Alex Smith is the youngest starting QB in the NFL?" Now tell me about how Brian Johnson was a 18 year old true sophomore starting for you.

So, age has nothing to do with it?

Those who rip on Alex should remember that BYU once had one of the biggest busts, Shanw Knight, a BYU defensive lineman was drafted in the first round and just never had the mentality needed to succeed. He had the body, but not the mind. I believe he ended up a Physical Therapist, because he was bright just not mean.

How can you argue "But he's still so young" on one hand, and argue "He's the brightest kid NFL" on the other? The arguments are counter-intuitive, as the age argument appeals to intelligence, or rather, the lack thereof. Simply stated, ff Alex Smith is so damn smart, then why does it matter how young he is?

On a related note, if he wasn't ready for the NFL, then why did he come out early?

I think the Crowton years established that youth and inexperience don't matter. If it's not a good enough excuse for BYU, it's not good enough for Utah either, right?
