Isaac Behevis Singer wrote stuff for all ages. He was a great story teller. I don't know if Jewish meets your requirement.

I appreciate your input but given the lack of direction, I'll need to continue to compile as Jews may not be disadvantaged enough to qualify. PCism is bad, bad, bad.

It's ok to require learning about subcultures, but to distinguish between the minorities until, "well, no, they're not down enough," if you want us to read black or latin literature, just say so. There is a reason those subcultures have not generated as much great literature, economically they've been suppressed enough to lack the time to produce it. Now, don't read this to mean, no good literature is produced by or within those subgroups, but those groups have not been historically as prolific as say Jewish writers.
