I think I'd join, sans all the atrocity stuff Dan is talking about. Defending your wife and children from death is something I'm okay with.

You don't need to join a group like the Danites to defend your wife and children from death.

truthfully though I think the danites were an anti Joesph Smith group and as soon as they said anything bad about the prophet i'd be out of there. I really don't think the Porter rockwell was ever a danite.

I don't know that anyone thinks you're an idiot. Just that your online persona leaves something to be desired.

sampson avard was excomunicated because of his part in the danites, the only reason people think that they had anything to do with eachother is because most of the officers were the same.

officers of the Church disavowed any sponsorship of the danites.

Default Go back and study up on the

Nauvoo charter and the rights given to the saints there. They were given the ability to form a standing militia which actually grew to be the second largest standing army in the US at the time, second only to the US federal army. The Nauvoo Legion struck fear in those bent on beating down the Mormons. This was not just because of its size, but also because virtually all memebrs of the fearsome Danites joined the Legion. It wasn't just some of the officers as you suggest.

And by the way, if I had a dollar for every disavowal put out by the church and its leaders that was just plain false, well, I could take a lavish trip around the world.

Default I would definitely have been a Danite

I am into secret societies. I also get really sick of Mormon bashing, even though I am not an active saint.

What I was suggesting is that they had the same people in their leadership. The danites and the legion were two different orginizations. Sampson Avard was the organizer of the danites, and joesph put together the legion.
