I doubt it's "an indictment of the level of spitituality in the Church." The brethren have gone to great lengths in recent years to make the church appear more mainstream. To the degree that they've occasionally hired outside image consulting firms to help them. I think this "watering down" is more the result of a concerted effort by the first presidency to make the church more palatable to a wider range of prospective converts.
