California:
why does it recruit so many top athletes while continuing to achieve average results?
California landed five-star Keenan Allen and four-star Chris McCain from North Carolina, reeled in Nick Forbes from Maryland, five-star Chris Martin from Colorado, Gabe King from Oregon and Cecil Whiteside from California.

But of course, all Five and Four Star high school football athletes are looking at a school for its academics.
Next guess?

How many top football programs are in attractive metro areas?
Not many. Why does Stanford recruit well? |

It is in a ritzy part of California. It has great weather. It is tied to the rich and famous. It has a stellar academic program. And it is modest in its recruiting success. It is not on par with Texas, USC, Florida or OU. It doesn't always better BYU in recruiting though in some years it does. Cal is in a less desirable part of town, and although rich and famous have attended there and there is a large endowment, it is not on par with Stanford. Plus the campus there sucks in comparison to Stanford, which has a beautiful campus.

How is that an answer?
I understand Stanford a bit, but I don't understand Cal. It plays IIRC in an average stadium, has an average history yet still recruits some top notch athletes.
