Yeah what if one was to seek the proper counsel for their homosexual thoughts and not feel relieved or make much progress? Does the Church as a whole believe that if you try hard "enough" that the thoughts WILL go away?

I'm not sure the church has a teaching specific to homosexual impulses. I think the doctrine is more general: that the impulses are temptation to sin and that the atonement is strong enough to overcome all temptation.

It's quite possible there are some temptations we must struggle with our lifelong. Homosexuality is not the only sinful desire people fight, but it seems to be the only one folks are interested in normalizing.

She doesn't even have to be funny, just attractive.

What does the Russian proverb, "All cats are gray at night" have to do with this?

Well there you go Rocky. She doesn't have to be funny or attractive.

Was the purpose of the teaching to say, we will be considered sinners for every thought we entertain, or was it to say, "be careful, guard your thoughts, for men do not sin, unless they give it some forethought?"

Have our teachings expounded upon the original intent so as to blur it beyond recognition?

Example.

Is it sin to see a person of your selection, think, wow, she's hot, and i bet ... and then go about your day, as opposed to, "wow, she's hot, it's time to put my game face on, and let's make a move. I'm going to do this and that, and thereafter we'll be swimming horizontal refreshment?"

My priest quorum advisor said it best:
