I was just adding some of these to my Netflix queue when I thought of two others that I can't believe no one's mentioned:
1) Winged migration - some of the coolest footage I've ever seen. My kids loved it too. 2) Supersize Me - One man's attempt to supply his diet solely from McD's--supersizing at every offered opportunity--and his attending decline of health. |

I liked Supersize me a lot, but he lost credibility with me when he puked after eating 1 quarterpounder with cheese and a large fries. Pansy.

A fun one for the family is Microcosmos. It was a ground-breaking film looking at the miniature world of insects. It is actually very entertaining, and if you love nature, check this one out.

Wiseman's old documentary High School is excellent.
Titicut Follies is another excellent Wiseman documentary. He goes into an institution for the criminally insane in Massachusetts.

There was a famous recent documentary about a sexual abuse situation in a family. I don't remember the details, but I recall someone here had seen it. There is also a documentary about a Catholic priest who molested and raped kids, and is just fine and dandy and free in England/Ireland. When I saw the father cry and exclaim "He raped my daughter time after time!" I realized that I might not have the power to not kill the man who did that to my daughter.

I have rented several of your recommendations. Here are my thoughts on a few: 1) Step into Liquid Very good. My kids loved it. 2) Dogtown and Z Boys Fascinating story. But a bit too stylistic and narcissistic for my taste. 3) The Last Waltz Good, but only if you are into classic rock. 4) Wordplay This one sucked me in. Enjoyable. 5) Sherman's March Definitely the most eclectic pick. I kept thinking "Why in the hell do I keep watching this?" but I couldn't help but watch the whole thing. Voyeuristic. The part with the LDS woman was funny. 6) God Grew Tired of Us This is my favorite of the bunch so far. Highly recommended.

Did anyone besides me recommend Sherman's march?
The attraction is that you are watching a disaster unfold. The filmmaker knows that he is in deep-shiz, and the viewers know it as well, and you can't help but want to watch it unfold and see what happens at the end. |
