Manchester NH Mission = Amalekites/Zoramites?

My oldest boy will embark on his 2-yr mission in September. He will serve in the Manchester NH Mission. It was a surprise to us as we always expected him to serve in a spanish country like I did. Nevertheless, he is very excited and will serve diligently. So if any of you live out that way, please make sure you invite him into your home for dinner.

I am just curious as to why everyone keeps telling us that he is going to teach the Amalekites/Zoramites and that people in that mission are so hard hearted? Anyone have experience with that part of the country?

I've been out New Hampshire way a few times. Have a client near Nashua. That is a beautiful area when the leaves are changing. The people I met were very nice, although I was not talking to them about the Gospel.

There are jerks and nice people in every mission. Your son will have a nice time.

You need to focus on renting more Monty Python movies.

Educated white liberals are not exactly the top demographic for the church. most of the converts in my area are poor minorities.

I am so glad the condition of my neighborhood or the exterior of my mother's home did not deter two white missionaries from Utah from knocking on the door or discouraged several sets of missionaries over the course of two years from following up with our family. Had they been discouraged by the conditions of poverty, they would not have found future returned missionaries, relief society presidents, bishopric members, primary presidents, YM/YW presidents, sunday school teachers, primary teachers, etc...or given hope to five young mexican-american kids that they could escape the poverty conditions in which they were being raised.

I am sure my boy will do well amongst the educated white liberals, but, if he happens to come across a rundown little shack with scruffy looking kids playing outside, I hope he stops and knocks on the door...

My guess is that he'll teach Hampshirites.

It is a great area of the country, tough to teach the gospel to old school roman catholics, but it can be done.

He will absolutely LOVE Maine and the people there.

Yeah he will certainly love that area of the nation, winters can be brutal and long, and the black flies can overwhelm during the summer, but it is awesome there.

I served in the Boston Ma mission which borders the Manchester mission to the south. We shared Spanish speaking missionaries with that mission when I was there from 93-95. New England is not a high baptizing area. Boston was fairly high baptizing because of the cultural diversity and the humility that poverty brings but the rural areas and smaller cities were rough. Manchester is mostly like the rural and smaller cities that were in the Boston mission. I served for 4 months in Nashua NH which is the northern most part of the Boston Mission and is just south of Manchester.

I like New England for lots of reasons but not for the ease of conversion. Never heard it called the Amalekites or Zoramites though. That kind of labeling seems counterproductive to me.
