Default The Prophet...

Does anyone remember what happened the last time the world relied on the Spirit rather than having a prophet to interpret things and share the will of the Lord?

I believe we refer to that time as The Apostasy. Why are there so many different religions with only one God? Each religion interprets things slightly different, some are just out for gain, but some are sincerely trying to do what's right - and those that make an effort typically have a lot of truth. It's not safe to say these people don't have the Spirit, if they're studying, praying, and searching for the truth of course they have a portion of the Spirit, so why don't they get it right? People that question the prophet continually and feel like they need the Spirit to tell them everything in their lives instead of having confidence in the Lord's oracle are walking dangerously close to apostasy. One of the reasons we NEED a prophet is that we are not yet ready to discern everything by way of the Spirit. Don't forget that our prophets have, for the most part (since the early Restoration days) been prophets in training for years as they server as general authorities - they are ready to learn by the Spirit and communicate with the Lord in ways that we're not yet prepared to do.

So, when the prophet gives counsel, by all means seek a confirmation of the truth, but it's foolish to assume that he may not be teaching us what's right.

Here's a great post, quote from President Hinckley...

what was not present during the apostasy was 1) the church 2) the priesthood, 3) ordinances (among those, the Gift of the Holy Ghost).

That's very true...but without a prophet how many of those would we have?

One problem I have with the story of the apostasy is it basically (for most LDS) writes off nearlly 2000 years of spiritual and religious thought with one turn of a phrase.

I believe that while there was a falling away and the true Church and authority were not present that some notable things did happen. Steps were being taken to make it possible for the complete Gospel to once again be present, and many men helped prepare the world for this, and many paid with their lives.

I have never felt that way, and I don't ever remember being taught that.

Same for me. I guess if you look for the worst in something, you'll always find it.

While I think that thought is rediculous, I've heard it more times than I'd like to admit at church. While I'm not sure it's a mainstream belief, it's certainly not a fringe idea in the church -- unfortunately.

Lindsay: Well, did it work for those people?

Tobias: No, it never does. I mean, these people somehow delude themselves into thinking it might, but...but it might work for us.
