President Hinckley mentioned that Joseph Smith was arrested on trumped up charges before being jailed and murdered in Carthage. My understanding was that Joseph was arrested because he smashed a printing press being run by dissenters in Nauvoo. Is this really a trumped up charge? Or is it other charges that were the so-called meat of the case?

Like all groups we like to couch our history in favorable terms.
I don't know if the charges were "trumped" or not. And yes it did involve destruction of a printing press. I didn't hear any mention today of Joseph firing off a couple of shots. I did hear the before and the after however. Not that I have a problem with not mentioning it. It just shows we like to shade our presentation. |

It is interesting that the part about the printing press never makes it into the seminary manuals. |
