D&C books
Ahoy all,
I need some book recomendations. I'm an early morning seminary teacher in our stake and D&C is next year. Can anyone recommend some good reading material on the DC in prep for next year? I see a lot of stuff on deseretbook.com, but have no idea what is interesting and what is lame. The DC doesn't have much of a story line like the BoM, NT, etc, so I'd like to mix it in with church history, a topic that bores me, so I haven't really studied it much, although the JSmith biography is helping there.... Anyone have a recomendation? Regards, Brian

The gathering of Zion - by Wallace Stegner - the best book on the mormon migration out there IMO
Ok anything else by Wallace Stegner

There is a real dearth of good books structured around the D&C itself, but I'd steer you to Dean Jessee's "The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith." It's the best original source material out there on J.S. Jr. until the Joseph Smith project finishes.
I've taken letters from it and discussed them alongside D&C sections that were written at the same time or near the same time.

thanks for the suggestions.
i've seen a number of suggestions for the Ostler, McConkie book Revelations of the Restoration. Is that any good? It seems to be aligned with might help most teaching teenagers. Amazon cheerfully suggested Palmer's An Insiders view of Mormon Origins and Bergera's Conflict in the Quorum. Anyone recommend, dis-recommend them? Regards, Brian

Solid read, unless you want to discuss the different philosophies Brigham and Orson had, and the 'marriage proposal' of Joseph to Orson Pratt's wife, I wouldn't recommend it for a Teacher's Quorum discussion. Otherwise I think it a solid read especially if you want to read a little more about Adam/God... |
