Leaving now is not leaving on our own terms? What about March 2009?

Because we destabilized the country we must leave it in a situation where it won't destabilize immediately upon leaving. Currently, if we left Iraq would crumble into a civil war within three to six months. That would be immoral. You tell me when we can reach a point of stabilization and I'll tell you when we can leave.

Much of what Bush has done in office can be seen as trying to upstage his father. In this case, he wants to keep the troops there until it's all roses and sunshine, because his dad pulled the troops out, leaving thousands of those who fought with us to be butchered after we left. The problem is that even the most hawkish at the time acknowledged that Bush Sr.'s actions were correct, fearing a long occupation very similar to what we're seeing now.

Actually, what they feared was that Baghdad could not be taken without house to house urban warfare and the cost was too high. This proved completely untrue. Very few turned out to be loyal to Saddam. The part about the urban warfare did come true, just not in the way that was imagined.
